Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Week 2: The Password Habit Still Costing Businesses Thousands

Last week we asked you to check five things about your security posture. This week, we're going deeper on the one item that quietly undermines all the others: passwords.

Here's the uncomfortable truth a strong password isn't the protection it used to be. Billions of credentials have been exposed in data breaches over the past decade, and attackers don't need to guess your password if it's already sitting in a leaked database from some unrelated breach years ago. That's how "sophisticated" attacks often start: not a hack, just a reused password.

Why MFA Matters More Than Password Complexity

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) means a stolen or guessed password isn't enough on its own the attacker also needs your phone, your authenticator app, or a physical security key. It's the single highest-impact security control available to small businesses today, and it's often free or nearly free to enable.

Where Businesses Typically Miss It

MFA on email is common now. But we routinely find gaps in:

  1. Ticketing and customer portals are often overlooked because they feel "internal"

  2. Financial and banking platforms are exactly where attackers want in

  3. Cloud file storage (SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Drive) is where sensitive documents actually live

  4. EHR, POS, or donor management systems are industry-specific platforms that don't always get the same security attention as email

What To Actually Do This Week

  1. List every system your business uses that holds sensitive data or financial access.

  2. Check whether MFA is enabled on each one and not just available, but actually turned on.

  3. For anything missing it, enable it this week. Most platforms support this natively at no extra cost.

  4. For your team, use a password manager (not sticky notes or browser autofill) so unique passwords are actually practical to maintain.

The Bottom Line

This isn't a technical overhaul it's a checklist you can work through in an afternoon. But it closes one of the most common doors attackers use to get in. If you're not sure where your business stands, that's a quick conversation, not a big project.
